You’ve also probably been thinking, “Is there a way to volunteer with the recovery in Moore and Shawnee and other places touched by last week’s tornadoes.”
A willingness to work is definitely in demand. So is working smart. If you are considering contributing time over this Memorial Day weekend, keep this in mind:
- Look online for ways to sign up to join volunteer efforts: This way you can pinpoint where agencies, organizations, church groups, etc. can use you most. Here’s an example: unitedwayokc volunteers
- Be careful when taking kids: Little ones might be eager to pitch in, but look for safe, appropriate settings.
- Consider people’s feelings: Emotions will be running high, especially for survivors. Be mindful of where they are. Damaged homes or broken items are still someone’s property. Being respectful goes a long way.
- Don’t discount money: For many groups, monetary donations are still crucial for sustaining efforts even after the cleanup is completed.
