Quick thoughts on volunteering while unemployed
6/11/2014
THE QUESTION: Is there still value in donating one’s time and talent while on the job hunt?
A few answers:
- “Volunteering keeps your job skills current, provides networking contacts who may be able to advance your career interests, opens doors to employment opportunities, and is believed to improve your health and self-esteem by keeping you physically, mentally, and socially active. Including volunteer services on your resume lets potential employers know that you value being active and productive.” — C. Floyd, Goodwill Job Connection
- "As a recruiter, I strongly encourage volunteering for those who have little work experience or those who have large gaps in employment. In this situation volunteering shows employers that you care about the community and that you are not satisfied simply staying at home. It also builds excellent references. I personally love checking references for people that have volunteered together." — R. Sorrels, Human Resources
- “Volunteering demonstrates a genuine interest in a company, a cause and a career you consider worthy of your time even before someone offers to pay you for your contributions.” — P. McDaris, TulsaWORKS instructor
